On May 13, 1787 the First Fleet embarked from Plymouth, England on a journey to the far side of the world. Under the leadership of Captain Arthur Phillip, the convoy of 11 ships contained, 1500 marines, officers, seamen and their families and 732 convicts. They were bound for the great South Land to establish the penal colony of New South Wales, the furure first state of the Australian Commonwealth. The fleet arrived in Botany Bay eight months and one week later. On January 26, 1788 7 days later, the fleet sailed to Port Jackson (the future Sydney Harbour) and Captain Phillip landed to proclaim the first Australia Day and became the first Governor of the new nation. H.M.S. Supply, 168 tons was the swiftest sailor in the first fleet and acted as a scout and message carrier during the voyage. It was the first ship which enters Botany Bay on January 19, 1788.
